Postgame Thoughts: Georgia E-mail

Nice win yesterday for the Tigers on the road against Georgia. Not great. But nice. I remember when I first found out that Mizzou was going to be playing at Georgia on Jan. 4 I wrote somewhere on MizzouRah (couldn't find link) that maybe it was going to be a little warmup for a Mizzou-Georgia National Championship matchup in football. *Long sigh* Oh well...
  • I'm reading a lot about how this win snaps the Tigers' 18 year SEC road losing streak but that's so misleading. It's not like Mizzou is making multiple trips to play SEC teams each year. Rather than say they broke an 18 year streak it would probably be better to say they broke a seven game SEC losing streak that happened to stretch across 18 years.
  • Lets also not get carried away with talking about how great this victory will look on our NCAA Tournament resume. I understand that Georgia plays in the SEC but they also lost to  6-8 Texas A&M Corpus Christi a couple weeks ago, AT HOME. They also suffered a 21 point loss to the always solid Loyola Ramblers (whose mascot is actually a wolf oddly enough) at the start of the season. But they did beat a solid Virginia Tech team and their best player, Terrance Woodbury was out for the TAMCC game. Bottom line: We beat a bad team from a BCS conference on the road in a sloppy game.
  • Is it just me or has DeMarre Carroll not looked like himself ever since he hurt his ankle against Illinois? He's still battling, which I love and I know that if he can walk then he'll be out on the floor. But it looks to me like he's not been going nearly as hard to the rim as he was pre-Braggin' Rights. Also looks like he's missing some elevation on his jump. If that's the case, that's a very bad sign. Keep your fingers crossed.
  • Fantastic game by Zaire Taylor today. 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting, three assists and 0 turnovers. Rock solid. He needed that after his performance against Illinois. I started the year skeptical about Kanye Taylor but quickly jumped on his bandwagon after the Tigers hot start. I was halfway back off after Braggin' Rights but decided to sit back down for awhile after today.
  • Miguel Paul has looked absolutely lost the last couple of games. He's had a deer in the headlights look since the Murray State game. Gotta expect that from at least some of your freshmen. Marcus Denmon has kinda been struggling too. Kid needs some major discipline with his shot selection, 11-of-40 from beyond the arc makes Matt Lawrence and Josh Kronke look consistent. It looks like it's going to be either feast or famine with Denmon during his rookie campaign. Of the three freshman guards, Kim English has clearly emerged as the most consistent option and that's been reflected in the amount of PT each of them has been getting.
  • Big props to Keith Ramsey who was clearly the MVP on Saturday. His performance has already made him a Tigerboard sensation (much like Justin Safford a year ago). I don't see Ramsey as a major impact player but he definitely could be a very good role player. He's kind of like a more athletic Darryl Butterfield with a better basketball IQ (and probably a higher IQ in general). Interior depth was a major concern coming into this season. You knew we would need either either Ramsey, Bowers or Moore to step in and play some significant minutes this year if we were going to be successful. Keith looks like he's capable of doing just that.
  • Anyone know what's happened to Justin Safford? Only four minutes and an 0-for on the statline. A little concerning.
  • Finally, I've heard from multiple sources that there was a solid contingent of Mizzou fans at the game. A lot of friends and family of Georgia native JT Tiller were in attendance and Mike Anderson apparently brought in a couple busloads of people to the game. We also might have had a kuchebag sighting so we'll try to get that posted within the next couple days.
